Summer Cleaning Series Part 7: Streak-Free Windows and Spotless Screens

Welcome back to our Summer Cleaning Series. In earlier parts we worked through the kitchen, bathrooms, outdoor entertaining areas, the car interior, the garage, and the bedroom. Today we turn to something that makes an instant difference in how bright and fresh your whole home feels: windows and screens. Summer is the perfect time, with longer days and more natural light pouring in, to get your glass crystal clear.

Why Windows Matter More in Summer

Dirty windows do more than look bad. A film of dust, pollen, and grime cuts down the natural light entering your home and makes rooms feel dull even on the sunniest days. Screens clogged with dust restrict airflow when you want a cool breeze. Cleaning both lets in more light and fresh air just when you want them most.

Gather Your Supplies

  • Two microfiber cloths, one for washing and one for drying
  • A squeegee
  • A bucket of warm water with a few drops of dish soap
  • White vinegar for a streak-free finish
  • A soft brush or vacuum with a brush attachment for screens
  • A drop cloth or old towel for the sill

Step 1: Dust Before You Wash

Always dust or vacuum the window frame, sill, and tracks before introducing any water. Wiping a wet cloth over dry dust creates muddy streaks that are hard to remove. Use a dry brush or your vacuum's crevice tool to clear the tracks where dirt and dead insects collect.

Step 2: Wash the Glass

Mix warm water with a few drops of dish soap, or combine equal parts water and white vinegar for a natural option. Wash the glass with a microfiber cloth, working from top to bottom. For exterior windows with heavy grime, wash twice.

Step 3: Squeegee for Streak-Free Results

The secret to professional-looking windows is a squeegee. Starting at the top corner, pull the squeegee down in a straight stroke, then wipe the blade with a dry cloth. Overlap each stroke slightly and work your way across. Finish by wiping the edges and bottom with a dry microfiber cloth.

Step 4: Clean the Screens

Screens are often forgotten, but they hold a surprising amount of dust and pollen.

  • Remove each screen and lay it flat
  • Vacuum both sides with a brush attachment
  • For deeper cleaning, wash gently with soapy water and a soft brush
  • Rinse with a hose or under a faucet
  • Let screens dry completely before reinstalling
  • Cleaning screens in summer is especially worthwhile, since clogged mesh blocks the cool evening breezes you want to invite in.

Step 5: Finish the Tracks and Sills

Wipe down the sills and tracks with a damp cloth. For grime stuck in the corners, a cotton swab or an old toothbrush dipped in vinegar works wonders. Dry everything to prevent mold.

    Pro Tips for Lasting Results

    • Clean windows on a cloudy day. Direct sun dries the cleaner too fast and causes streaks
    • Use vertical strokes inside and horizontal outside, so you can tell which side any streak is on
    • Don't forget to clean both sides of the glass on the same day
