Summer Cleaning Series Part 5: Car Interior and Garage Finishing Touches

This is it — the grand finale of our Summer Cleaning Series! Over the past four installments, we've worked our way through [AC units and fans](/blogs/news/summer-cleaning-series-part1-ac-fans), [outdoor furniture and patio](/blogs/news/summer-cleaning-series-part2-outdoor-furniture-patio), [windows, screens, and blinds](/blogs/news/summer-cleaning-series-part3-windows-screens-blinds), and [pool areas and entertaining spaces](/blogs/news/summer-cleaning-series-part4-pool-area-outdoor-entertaining). Now we're finishing strong with your car interior and some final garage touches to complete the full sweep.

By the end of this post, your entire home — inside and out — will be summer-ready.

Part A: Deep Cleaning Your Car Interior

Your car is essentially a second living space. Between commutes, road trips, school runs, and drive-throughs, interiors accumulate dirt, crumbs, dust, and odors fast. Here's how to give it a thorough refresh.

Step 1: Remove Everything

Take out all loose items: floor mats, trunk items, car seats (if removable), phone mounts, and any trash or clutter. Check under seats, in door pockets, and in the center console. You'll be surprised what's hiding.

Step 2: Vacuum Thoroughly

This is the most important step and where most of the visible improvement comes from.

  • Seats — Vacuum all surfaces, working the nozzle into seams and crevices where crumbs and dirt collect.
  • Floor and under seats — Use a crevice tool to reach under seats and around pedals.
  • Trunk — Vacuum the trunk floor and walls.
  • Floor mats — Remove and shake out, then vacuum both sides. For rubber mats, scrub with soap and water and let air dry.

Step 3: Clean the Dashboard and Console

  • Wipe down the dashboard, steering wheel, center console, and door panels with a damp microfiber cloth.
  • For textured plastic surfaces, use a soft detailing brush to get into grooves and vents.
  • Clean air vents by running a thin dusting brush or a foam paintbrush through each slat.
  • Wipe the steering wheel thoroughly — it's one of the most touched (and most germ-laden) surfaces in your car.

Step 4: Clean Seats by Material

Fabric seats:
  • Spray with an upholstery cleaner.
  • Scrub with a soft brush in circular motions.
  • Blot with a clean cloth to lift dirt.
  • Let dry with windows cracked for ventilation.
  • Leather seats:
  • Wipe with a leather-specific cleaner on a microfiber cloth.
  • Work in sections, wiping clean as you go.
  • Apply leather conditioner afterward to prevent cracking — especially important in summer when heat dries out leather.
  • Step 5: Clean Windows and Mirrors (Interior)

Interior glass gets a hazy film from off-gassing plastics and general buildup.

    • Use a glass cleaner and a clean microfiber cloth.
    • Wipe in straight lines rather than circles to avoid streaking.
    • Don't forget the rearview mirror and any backup camera lenses.

    Step 6: Eliminate Odors

If your car has a lingering smell after cleaning:

    • Sprinkle baking soda on fabric seats and carpets, let sit for 15-20 minutes, then vacuum it up.
    • Place an open box of baking soda under a seat for ongoing odor absorption.
    • Check under seats for forgotten food items — a common culprit.
    • Replace your cabin air filter if it hasn't been changed recently. A dirty filter circulates stale, dusty air.

    Step 7: The Finishing Details

    • Cup holders — Wipe out with a damp cloth. For sticky residue, use a damp old toothbrush.
    • Seat belts — Wipe the full length with a damp cloth and mild soap. Let dry fully extended.
    • Door jambs — Often overlooked. Wipe these down to remove dirt buildup along the edges.
    • Trunk organization — Use a collapsible organizer to keep groceries, emergency supplies, and gear from rolling around.

    Part B: Garage Finishing Touches

If you followed our [garage deep clean guide](/blogs/news/how-to-deep-clean-garage-before-summer), your garage is already in great shape. Here are the finishing touches to complete the space.

    Final Organization Check

    • Confirm everything has a home. If something doesn't have a designated spot, it will end up on the floor.
    • Ensure frequently used items are most accessible. Summer tools like garden hoses, lawn mower fuel, and sports equipment should be front and center.
    • Move winter items to high or back storage. Snow shovels, salt, and winter clothing don't need prime real estate right now.

    Garage Door Maintenance

While you're focused on the garage, give the door some attention:

    • Wipe down the interior and exterior surfaces.
    • Lubricate moving parts — hinges, rollers, and tracks benefit from a silicone-based lubricant.
    • Test the auto-reverse safety feature by placing a board in the door's path. The door should reverse on contact.
    • Check weather stripping along the bottom and sides. Replace if cracked or missing — this keeps pests, water, and dust out.

    Pest Prevention

Summer means more insects and critters trying to get into your garage.

    • Seal gaps around doors, windows, and where pipes or wires enter.
    • Remove food sources — birdseed, pet food, and trash attract pests.
    • Keep the perimeter clean — clear leaves, mulch, and debris from the outside of the garage door.
    • Set traps if needed in corners away from high-traffic areas.

    Create a Cleaning Station

Set up a small cleaning station in your garage for ongoing maintenance:

    • A push broom and dustpan
    • A spray bottle with all-purpose cleaner
    • A few microfiber cloths
    • A bucket
    • Paper towels for quick spills

Having supplies right there makes it easy to wipe up a spill or do a quick sweep without going back inside.

    The Summer Cleaning Series Wrap-Up

Congratulations — you've completed the entire Summer Cleaning Series! Here's what you've accomplished:

    • Part 1: AC units and ceiling fans — ready for efficient summer cooling
    • Part 2: Outdoor furniture and patio — a welcoming outdoor living space
    • Part 3: Windows, screens, and blinds — maximum natural light and fresh air
    • Part 4: Pool area and entertaining spaces — guest-ready for summer gatherings
    • Part 5: Car interior and garage — a clean vehicle and functional workspace

Your home is now cleaned from top to bottom, inside and out. The key to maintaining this level of cleanliness is consistency — small weekly touch-ups prevent the need for another marathon cleaning session.

Enjoy your summer in a clean, comfortable space. You've earned it.
