Summer Cleaning Series Part 4: Pool Area and Outdoor Entertaining Spaces

Our Summer Cleaning Series continues! We've covered [AC units and fans](/blogs/news/summer-cleaning-series-part1-ac-fans) in Part 1, [outdoor furniture and patio](/blogs/news/summer-cleaning-series-part2-outdoor-furniture-patio) in Part 2, and [windows, screens, and blinds](/blogs/news/summer-cleaning-series-part3-windows-screens-blinds) in Part 3. Now let's tackle the spaces where summer memories are made: your pool area and outdoor entertaining zones.

Whether you're hosting a Fourth of July barbecue or just enjoying quiet poolside evenings, a clean outdoor space makes all the difference.

Pool Deck Cleaning

Your pool deck takes a beating from chlorine splash, sunscreen drips, food spills, and constant foot traffic. Here's how to bring it back to life.

Concrete Pool Decks

  • Clear the area. Move all furniture, planters, and pool toys.
  • Sweep thoroughly to remove leaves, dirt, and debris.
  • Pre-rinse with a garden hose.
  • Apply a concrete cleaner or a solution of oxygen-based bleach and warm water. Avoid chlorine bleach near pools — it can damage surrounding landscaping.
  • Scrub with a stiff deck brush in sections, working with the slope so dirty water flows away.
  • Rinse thoroughly with a hose. A pressure washer on a moderate setting speeds up this step significantly.
  • Let dry completely before replacing furniture.
  • Paver or Stone Pool Decks

    • Follow similar steps but use a pH-neutral cleaner to protect the stone.
    • For pavers, check for any shifting or uneven sections that could be a tripping hazard.
    • Sweep polymeric sand into joints if gaps have formed over time.

    Wood Pool Decks

    • Use a wood deck cleaner, not bleach.
    • Scrub with a soft-bristle brush to avoid damaging the grain.
    • Check for loose boards, protruding nails, or splintering — safety first around bare feet and wet surfaces.

    Pool Toy and Float Cleaning

Inflatable pool toys and floats spend weeks in chlorinated water and sun, leading to a sticky, grimy surface.

  • Inflate fully if deflated.
  • Spray with a garden hose to remove surface debris.
  • Mix warm water with mild dish soap and wipe down with a soft cloth or sponge.
  • For mildew spots, apply a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then scrub gently.
  • Rinse completely and dry in the sun.
  • Store inflated (if space allows) to prevent creases that trap mold.
  • Outdoor Kitchen and Grill Area

The outdoor kitchen needs just as much attention as your indoor one — arguably more, since it's exposed to the elements.

    The Grill

  • Heat the grill on high for 15 minutes to burn off residue.
  • Scrub grates with a grill brush (brass bristles for cast iron, nylon for porcelain-coated grates).
  • Remove and clean drip pans and grease traps. Soak in warm soapy water, scrub, rinse, and dry.
  • Wipe down the exterior with warm soapy water and a soft cloth. For stainless steel, wipe with the grain.
  • Check burners and gas lines for clogs or wear.
  • Counters and Prep Areas

    • Clean with an all-purpose cleaner appropriate for the surface material.
    • Sanitize cutting areas with a diluted bleach solution or white vinegar.
    • Check and clean the outdoor sink if you have one — drains can clog with debris.

    Outdoor Fridge or Cooler

    • Empty completely and discard old items.
    • Wipe interior with a baking soda and water solution (deodorizes and cleans).
    • Wash removable shelves and bins separately.
    • Wipe the exterior and check the door seal for mold.

    The Entertaining Area

    Outdoor Bar or Serving Station

    • Wipe all surfaces with appropriate cleaners.
    • Clean and organize drinkware, serving ware, and utensils.
    • Check string lights and replace burned-out bulbs.
    • Wipe down any outdoor speakers or electronics with a dry microfiber cloth.

    Fire Pit Area

    • Remove old ash and debris from the fire pit (dispose when completely cool).
    • Scrub the interior of metal fire pits with warm soapy water.
    • For stone fire pits, brush out ash and check mortar for cracking.
    • Clean surrounding seating using the methods from Part 2 of this series.
    • Replenish firewood and fire-starting supplies.

    Outdoor Dining Area

    • Clean the table and chairs thoroughly (refer to Part 2 for furniture-specific instructions).
    • Wash outdoor tablecloths, cushion covers, and any fabric elements.
    • Check umbrellas for mold or mildew — open them up and scrub spots with vinegar solution. Let them dry fully in the sun before storing.

    Safety Checks for the Season

While you're cleaning, take a few minutes for a safety walkthrough:

    • Pool fencing and gates — Ensure gates self-close and latch properly.
    • Non-slip surfaces — Check that anti-slip mats or coatings are still effective on wet areas.
    • Lighting — Test all outdoor lights, especially pathway and step lights.
    • Electrical outlets — Make sure outdoor GFCI outlets are functioning (press the test button).
    • First aid kit — Restock your outdoor first aid supplies.

    Creating a Maintenance Schedule

Once your pool and entertaining areas are deep cleaned, keep them that way with a simple routine:

    • After every use: Wipe down cooking surfaces, sweep food debris, empty trash.
    • Weekly: Sweep the pool deck, wipe down furniture, check pool chemical levels.
    • Monthly: Deep clean the grill, scrub the pool deck, wash cushion covers.
    • Seasonally: Full deep clean (what you just did!).
