How to Deep Clean Home Appliances: A Complete Room-by-Room Guide
Share
Your home appliances work hard every day, but when was the last time you gave them a thorough cleaning? Built-up grease, mineral deposits, and hidden grime don't just look bad — they reduce performance, increase energy costs, and can even become health hazards. Here's how to deep clean every major appliance in your home.
Kitchen Appliances: Where Grease and Grime Hide
The kitchen is ground zero for appliance buildup. Heat, moisture, and food particles create the perfect environment for stubborn residue.
Dishwasher Deep Clean
Your dishwasher needs cleaning too, despite being full of soap and water every cycle. Mineral deposits, food debris, and soap scum accumulate in hidden areas.
Remove the bottom rack and check the drain area for trapped food particles. Pull out the filter (most modern dishwashers have a twist-out filter on the floor of the unit) and scrub it with a toothbrush under hot running water. Place a cup of white vinegar on the top rack and run a hot empty cycle. Follow with a sprinkle of baking soda on the floor of the dishwasher and run a short hot cycle.
Microwave Interior Reset
Fill a microwave-safe bowl with one cup of water and two tablespoons of vinegar. Microwave on high for five minutes — the steam loosens all the splattered food. Let it sit for two minutes with the door closed, then wipe everything clean with a damp cloth. The grime comes off effortlessly.
Oven and Stovetop
Skip the harsh chemical oven cleaners. Make a paste of baking soda and water, spread it over the oven interior (avoiding heating elements), and let it sit overnight. In the morning, spray with vinegar — it'll fizz and bubble — then wipe everything clean.
For stovetop burner grates, soak them in a sink of hot soapy water for 30 minutes, then scrub with a nylon brush.

Laundry Room: Fighting Mold and Mineral Buildup
Washing Machine Maintenance
Front-loading washers are notorious for developing mold around the door gasket. Pull back the rubber seal and wipe it thoroughly with a vinegar-soaked cloth. Leave the door open between loads to let it air dry.
Run a monthly cleaning cycle: pour two cups of white vinegar into the detergent dispenser and run the hottest, longest cycle empty. For top loaders, add the vinegar to the drum directly.
Dryer Efficiency Clean
A clogged dryer doesn't just waste energy — it's a fire hazard. Clean the lint trap after every load (you know this), but also vacuum the lint trap slot with a narrow attachment every month. Once a year, disconnect the dryer vent hose and clean it out completely. You can use a dryer vent brush kit or a leaf blower.
Bathroom Appliances
Exhaust Fan
Bathroom exhaust fans accumulate dust that reduces their effectiveness. Turn off the power, remove the cover, and soak it in warm soapy water. Use a vacuum with a brush attachment to clean the fan blades, then wipe the housing with a damp cloth.
Living Room and Bedroom
Humidifiers and Dehumidifiers
These appliances are breeding grounds for mold and bacteria if not cleaned regularly. Empty and rinse the water tank daily. Weekly, fill the tank with a mixture of one tablespoon of white vinegar per cup of water, let it soak for 30 minutes, then scrub with a soft brush.
Vacuum Cleaner Maintenance
Your cleaning tool needs cleaning too. Empty the dustbin or replace the bag when it's two-thirds full. Wash or replace the filter according to the manufacturer's instructions. Use scissors to carefully cut tangled hair from the brush roller. Wipe down the exterior with a damp cloth.

Create Your Appliance Cleaning Schedule
Staying on top of appliance maintenance is easier with a schedule:
- Weekly: Wipe down microwave interior, clean coffee maker
- Monthly: Run dishwasher and washing machine cleaning cycles, vacuum dryer lint slot
- Quarterly: Deep clean oven, clean exhaust fans, descale coffee maker
- Annually: Clean dryer vent hose, service HVAC system, deep clean refrigerator coils
The Payoff of Regular Appliance Cleaning
Clean appliances last longer, work better, and use less energy. A clean refrigerator coil alone can reduce energy consumption by up to 15 percent. Regular maintenance prevents costly breakdowns and keeps your home healthier.
